Advanced Access Solutions for a Heritage-Listed Landmark

KJ Scaffolding was engaged to deliver specialist access solutions for restoration works at Hampden Bridge, a heritage-listed suspension bridge and one of New South Wales’ most iconic historic structures.

To support critical maintenance and preservation works, our team installed a suspended (hung) scaffold system utilising the advanced Multi-Purpose Beam system (MPBS) from AT-PAC. This engineered access solution enabled safe and efficient working access beneath the bridge deck while maintaining full consideration for the structure’s heritage value and visual integrity.

The project required a highly engineered approach due to the bridge’s age, significance, and restricted working environment. Careful planning was essential to ensure the installation could be completed safely while minimising disruption to traffic and the surrounding community.

Key Challenges :

  • Working within a heritage-listed structure of national significance
  • Installing access beneath an active road bridge
  • Maintaining traffic flow and minimising disruption
  • Protecting the integrity and appearance of historic bridge elements
  • Complex suspended access requirements over water and roadway

Our Contribution :

  • Design and installation of a hung scaffold system using AT-PAC Multi Purpose Beams
  • Safe under-bridge access platform for inspection and restoration works
  • Engineered load distribution to suit heritage structure constraints
  • Coordination with stakeholders to maintain traffic and public safety
  • Compliance with heritage, engineering, and WHS requirements

Project Outcomes :

The suspended access system enabled restoration teams to carry out essential works safely and efficiently, while ensuring Hampden Bridge remained operational throughout the project. The solution balanced technical performance with sensitivity to one of NSW’s most significant heritage infrastructure assets.

At KJ Scaffolding, we are proud to deliver engineered access solutions that support the preservation of Australia’s built heritage while keeping critical infrastructure safe and functional.
